Welcome screen

Hi all. :)
I was wondering if anyone here could tell me if Vista is really going to have ads running on the Welcome screen?
Thanks!

Thanks! No they won't have ads running on the welcome screen.

Not a chance... I don't think there will be any advertisements within Windows Vista other than helping out other Microsoft products... ie: sign up for .NET Passport etc.

Well, this was the article I read on it:
http://news.softpedia.com/news/Vista-Antitrust-Case-In-The-Making-17865.shtml
But there are a lot of articles out there about it:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=vista+welcome+screen+ads&btnG=Google+Search
And so I thought I would ask the insiders here about it because it seems hard to believe.

I could imagine this would open the door to spammers and spyware folks to advertise if the APIs were released, that is if it were true, but from what the other responses indicate, it's not tru anyway, which I tend to agree with.

I personally would not mind ads :) as long as they're optional of course. They could jazz the computer up..
in fact...the Welcome screen should be significantly customizable, and if we want ads on it we should be able to have ads on it, but that's for another thread... :)

But advertisements if they were optional... there wouldn't be a point because people get revenue out of them - they are there on websites for that purporse and you can't usually turn them off ;o)

Free built-in spam? Aren't we trying to fight that stuff?

Not on my computer! If I have Vista on my machine, it means I've paid for it, and I'm not going to accept ads. Optional, smoptional, there will be novices who don't know how to remove the ads if they don't like them.
It's bad enough that manufacturers of new computers install al that crapware, much less having ads, optional or not, appear on my new computer! I've serviced computers that are full of that junk, and the new owner just left it to interrupt his/her work, simply because they didn't know how to get it off.

That's why you ALWAYS format a customer's computer and clean install Windows, then the *absolute necessary* drivers (NOT fancy junk driver utilities), then that's it! No need to install extra software the customer doesn't want.
I want to emphasis driver utilities because I find them to actually do more harm than good. For example, some sound card drivers have this optional program to control the volume. I have Volume Control in Windows, why do I need extra junk to bother myself? Same goes to video card drivers, and unless a customer really like tinkering with overclock speeds, I find raw drivers are the most stable to use. For example, ATI drivers have this Catalyst utility. Not a bad program in itself, but unless you want Doom IV to play nice with Radeon 9600, you don't want to *maintain* another program on the computer. Maintain as in keep updating them when new drivers are released, fix them if they crash your system, etc. Life's tough and miserable already, and we don't need these added distractions. Have you ever need to maintain sound and video drivers for your iPod? I guess not, and that makes CE devices the ultimate in simplicity and reliability, and PCs suck honestly in this field.
Therefore,
the *leanest* drivers are those that come from Windows itself.
